The Christmas Camp programme was ramping up, which added pressure to finding the time to monitor all the children closely and deal with any medical issues without unduly disrupting their participation in activities.
On a personal level, Euan always found that he had to distance himself more and more from things that werenât medical as the anticipation built and there were specific activities he usually avoided like the plague. The Christmas themed dress up party at the castle tonight was one of those activities. So was the posting of letters in the elf tree. Heâd gone along today, however, and while heâd told himself it was because he was keeping an extra eye on Milo and because he wanted to make sure Maggie wasnât doing anything that would make her pain level harder to manage, Euan knew that wasnât the whole story.
Heâd gone on the sleigh ride because Abby had gone. Because he wanted to be close enough to be able to see her and talk to her. Because moments between and after the morning health checks hadnât been enough. Most of all, it was because he felt safe. It would only take a glance and heâd be able to tap into a distraction that could override any ghosts that were lying in wait for him. It would be no effort at all to remember what last night had been like. It would, in fact, be a pleasure to give in to the temptation to relive every touch. Every kiss. Every delicious stolen moment of being completely oblivious to the outside world. Heâd been right in thinking that his attraction to Abby could be a life-saver and that had been when heâd only experienced what it was like to kiss her. Now he knew what it was like to fall into an exquisite, physical oblivion in her company and that had increased any distracting power exponentially.
To his astonishment, he had genuinely enjoyed the sleigh ride this morning.
And he was quite agreeable to Maggieâs request that he got his bagpipes out for the period of time the children were warming up in the drawing room before lunch so that they could have a quick choir practice.
âAs you will have seen on our programme, we go down to the village church for the carol service on Christmas Eve,â Maggie told everybody whoâd gathered to soak in the warmth of the fire after their chilly outing to the forest. âEuan pipes us in and weâre carrying our candles and then the bagpipes fade away when weâre at the front of the church and we start singing and then everybody else joins in.â
âOh, that sounds lovely.â It was Benâs grandmother who spoke up. âWhat carol will it be? Weâve been practising at home from the list ever since we knew we were coming to camp.â
ââThe Little Drummer Boyâ. One of my absolute favourites.â Maggie beamed at everyone. âEuanâs going to play a little bit for you now, just so you know how loud it is.
